12/10/2012 - Autumns Here

Summer? has been and gone and the last of the swallows have flown south, but the mute swans are back. I have never seen swans looking so white. Also the lapwings and curlews are out in force.

The field in front of the Lodges has been put down to barley this year as the grass was very tired and the ground needed a change.

We've added to our collection of poultry over the summer and now have some more hens and some Saxony and runner ducks, guinea fowl and four turkeys. These turkeys have nothing to fear at Christmas as they are great characters especially the cock bird. Remember a turkey is for life not just for Christmas. We've also had a hen sitting on eggs in the orcghard(couldn't she have done that before the frosts started?). Sadly only 1 has hatched but it is a little cutie and she is so proud.

We've also been busy on other fronts and are currently part way through putting up a wind turbine in the first field on the right as you come on to the farm hopefully it will be up and turning by the end of November.

We spent most of last Sunday planting bulbs in the woods. 1000 English bluebells in one area plus 100 wild daffodils, 100 wood anemones and 100 wild garlic in another area plus 100 fritillaries around the big pond. Hopefully it won't be too long before guests can enjoy a lovely display and our sore knees and hands won't have been in vain!
